Description
Arimidex is a potent highly selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. In postmenopausal women, estradiol is mainly produced by conversion of androstenedione to estrone in peripheral tissues by the aromatase enzyme complex. Estrone is further converted to estradiol. Lowering estradiol levels has been demonstrated to have therapeutic effects in women with breast cancer. In postmenopausal women, administration of Arimidex at a daily dose of 1 mg resulted in reduction of estradiol levels by more than 80%, which was confirmed by a high-sensitivity test.
Arimidex has no progestagenic, androgenic or estrogenic activity.
Arimidex at a daily dose of up to 10 mg does not affect cortisol and aldosterone secretion, which was measured before and after a standard ACTH stimulation test (ACTH). Consequently, there is no need for corticosteroid replacement administration.
